Many school districts have pushed back the PSAT/NMSQT, the test that qualifies high school juniors for the National Merit Scholarship Program, to January due to COVID-19. As studies have shown, students perform better on tests when they know what to expect, so Scholar Power is offering, for free, a short series of three one-hour zoom meetings for any interested sophomores and juniors. It will be led by Scholar Power President, and current National Merit Semifinalist, Nico Prentosito, who will cover test expectations, study tips, test-taking strategies, and free study resources.
Please email ScholarPowerInfo@gmail.com for more information or to register for the Zoom meetings, which will be held on Monday, December 28; Wednesday, December 30; and Friday, January 1; at 2 pm each day.
Scholar Power has created a YouTube channel to share videos that empower student scholars. Our current video series is on preparing for the PSAT and SAT. We felt this is important because these tests are used in college admissions and scholarship selection, yet the playing field is not level. Wealthier students can afford expensive prep courses, while students from less wealthy districts, such as our founders' school district in which over 70% of students are economically-disadvantaged, are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to these tests. So we wanted to provide prep videos for FREE!

Part of our mission is to change the culture surrounding academic achievement in a positive way. There are many aspects to this, such as creating a culture of support and high expectations, and another aspect is changing the image of what an academic achiever looks like. We not only want to add more diversity to this image, but we also want to make it just as popular to achieve at a high level in academics as it is to achieve at a high level in sports or music. So we are working on producing a series of public service announcements featuring local and national celebrities promoting academic excellence. If you would like to participate, please let us know!
